Moorhead Airport committee seeks volunteers for September fly-in during city sesquicentennial

The Moorhead Airport Committee discussed plans for a fall fly-in during its Feb. 26 meeting as the city marks its sesquicentennial and the airport celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Christy, airport staff, said staff and King Aviation are supportive of using the large Moorhead Aviation hangar and asked for volunteers to form a coordination group. The event is proposed for September to align with Greater Moorhead Days. "This year is actually the city's 100 and fiftieth anniversary or sesquicentennial as well as the airport's thirtieth anniversary. So it's a great year to do [a fly-in]," Christy said.

Committee members volunteered to help on a supporting basis rather than lead full organizing efforts. Heather, a committee member, said she was "really excited about the opportunity" and offered to help rather than take the lead. Another member, Jared, and at least one other committee member also volunteered to assist. Staff said the city93s marketing person will help with flyers and promotion.

Christy said there is not a separate fly-in budget; organizers typically rely on volunteers and occasional paid vendors. The committee discussed potential activities that have appeared at past fly-ins, including a vintage car show, helicopter demonstrations and model airplane demos, and noted that ramp parking for car shows is an item to resolve in advance.

Bruce Emmell and his wife Phyllis were cited as volunteers who organized past fly-ins; staff said their experience could help reconnect organizers with recurring participants and vendors.

The committee asked that staff keep members updated as planning progresses and that volunteers communicate with Christy by email or phone.
