Christy, airport staff, told the Moorhead Airport Committee on Feb. 26 that several infrastructure projects are moving forward, including relocation of the airport93s Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS), a planned larger Jet A fuel tank and pump replacements, PAPI (precision approach path indicator) replacements, and an approved grant for a new plow truck.
The committee heard that MnDOT and FAA coordination has identified a new AWOS site south of the primary runway near the minimum maintenance entrance road and that the site has been approved. "This site is approved," Christy said, adding that the next steps are environmental and cultural reviews, an update to the airport layout plan and electrical design work. She said MnDOT indicated that, if environmental reviews go well, site work such as power and foundations could occur this fall.
Christy said the city and airport staff plan to apply for MnDOT grants this spring to fund a larger Jet A tank and replacement of the airport93s fuel pumps, which were installed in the mid-1990s. "We did get city council approval for the local share of that project, assuming an approved MnDOT grant," she said. Staff noted MnDOT grants are competitive and that fuel-tank projects do not always score highest, so an application will be prepared when the grants open, likely in March.
The committee also heard that following a MnDOT inspection last summer, the concrete bases for the airport93s four PAPIs need work. Staff is preparing a grant application to replace the PAPI units and their concrete bases; the existing units were installed in the 1990s.
On equipment, Christy said the city93s grant application for a new plow truck was approved and the truck purchase is included in the city93s capital improvement program (CIP). "That truck is 1994," she said, describing the current vehicle as old and difficult to service because parts are not available.
Committee members asked about the airport93s capacity and future expansion. Christy said there is a waiting list for hangar space, and the city completed a taxiway expansion within the last year that created additional private-hangar sites, though high construction costs have slowed take-up. Jake, representing Moorhead/King Aviation, said 2024 fuel sales were strong and airport activity remains high.
The committee was scheduled to review the longer-term capital improvement plan at its next meeting.
