Fountain firefighter receives distinguished service award after off‑duty plane rescue

Chief Graham presented a distinguished service award to Fountain Fire Department firefighter‑paramedic Andy White for his actions after a June 16, 2024, small‑plane crash near Larkspur, Colorado.

The award recognizes a member who “goes above and beyond the call of duty by illustrating great dedication, initiative, and superior capabilities,” Chief Graham said. He described White’s off‑duty intervention when he stopped his vehicle, scaled a wildlife fence and entered the water to assist occupants of the downed aircraft.

Chief Graham said White entered the wreckage “despite the dangers of potential drowning and becoming contaminated from the fuel from the airplane,” and provided “critical care to the injured individuals.” The chief said first responders on the scene “commended his efforts” and that the pilot’s chances of survival would have been “significantly diminished” had White not acted quickly.

The chief also noted White’s background as a professional pilot and described him as “a highly skilled caregiver and an invaluable mentor to the department.” Mayor and council members joined staff and the honoree for a post‑presentation photo.

The award was presented during the council’s presentations section; no formal council vote was required.

The city also said the recognition was delayed intentionally to allow details of the incident to be fully confirmed before public presentation.
