Senate advances bill allowing street-legal utility vehicles on certain U.S. highways with low speed limits

Senator Guthrie explained Senate Bill 20 as a technical change to Oklahoma’s vehicle statutes to allow street-legal utility vehicles to use U.S.-designated highways when the posted speed limit is 45 mph or less.
Guthrie said the change resolves an inconsistency that left some communities divided by highways on which these vehicles could not legally travel. He said the update aligns state law with what already makes local transportation sense. The Senate advanced the bill on third reading; the clerk recorded 46 ayes.
“Right now, street legal utility vehicles are restricted from using US designated highways, even when the speed limit is 45 miles an hour or less,” Guthrie told the chamber. “By updating one paragraph in this statute, the bill allows street legal utility vehicles to operate on US designated highways where the speed limit is 45 miles an hour or less.”
There were no questions of the author and no floor debate recorded before the chamber advanced the measure. The roll call showed 46 ayes; the chair declared the bill advanced.
Senate Bill 20 will proceed to the next stage of consideration.
