Miami Lakes Veterans Committee approves $500 donation, discusses banners and veterans monument

The Miami Lakes Veterans Committee met and took several administrative actions related to event proceeds, banner policy and community donations.
Committee members said the Reindeer Run raised more than $50,000 and discussed allocating proceeds to a veterans monument, veterans-family scholarships and local organizations. The committee reviewed an undrafted appreciation letter for donors and voted to postpone approval of that letter so members could revise wording and add a clearer description of where funds will go.
The committee voted to donate $500 to Fishing with America's Finest, a charity event scheduled for April 5. A motion to donate $500 was moved and seconded and the committee approved the donation during the meeting.
Members also moved a banners policy item into old business for further work. Committee members said the town has more veteran banners than available lampposts and discussed a plan to first offer banners back to families whose honorees have moved away, then to remove or reassign banners where no family contact exists. The committee discussed memorializing deceased Miami Lakes veterans on the veterans monument in Veterans Park rather than leaving banners indefinitely on Main Street lamp poles.
On Arbor Day, the committee voted to dedicate at least one tree in honor of Judy Vargasier; members said the mayor had approved a proclamation. The committee also discussed logistics for QR codes and a volunteer bank project led by Councilman Alex Sanchez; members said Sanchez plans to attend a future meeting to present a volunteer-bank proposal.
The committee scheduled a special call meeting to prepare a report to the town council before the council's March deadline; members settled on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. for that special meeting.
Minutes for a prior meeting and other routine items were approved during the session. Several agenda items were deferred for follow-up at the special meeting or subsequent regular meetings.
