Student representative reports book-drive pickup with three Miami Lakes schools confirmed

At its Feb. 20 meeting, the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board heard a student representative report that three local schools have confirmed participation in a townwide children’s book drive and that organizers are awaiting permission from additional principals.

Katie, the board’s student representative, said, “contacting students have been a little bit hard, so I resulted to contacting their sponsors instead.” She reported that Miami Lakes Educational Center, Goldman, and Miami Lakes Middle School are confirmed to participate, while organizers are still waiting to hear back from other schools and principals, including the principal at Bob Graham (permission pending).

The board discussed logistics for collecting books. Members suggested establishing at least one permanent drop-off location in town for donors who cannot deliver books directly to schools. Katie noted there are constraints on classroom libraries and school media-center intake policies: when books are added to classroom libraries they may require cataloguing.

Board members said they will follow up with principals and volunteers already contacted and that a flyer for the drive is ready pending inclusion of the town and EAB logos. Katie said the flyer will be shared with board members for distribution once the logos are added.

The report included a brief procedural note: organizers will offer guidance to participating schools on whether to accept new or gently used books, and will coordinate pickup of donated books once participating schools are finalized. No formal action or funding decision was taken at the meeting.

Less urgent logistical items — including whether donated classroom-library books must be individually catalogued — remained under discussion and will be resolved by the student representative and staff outside of the meeting.
