The Ithaca Landmarks Preservation Commission voted Feb. 25 to approve a window-replacement proposal for 102 Triphammer Road in the Fort Hill (East Hill) Historic District, allowing Renewal by Andersen products for five porch windows subject to conditions to replicate the property's historic appearance.
Representatives from Renewal by Andersen presented samples and explained the proposed composite (Fibrex) frames, simulated divided light (SDL) or simulated divided light with spacer-bar options, and finish trims that would be used to match the existing look. Staff and commission members discussed how the product would be installed in the existing stucco pocket and the need to preserve or replicate the historic visual relationships of sash and trim.
The commission placed two conditions on the approval: that the external muntin/muntin width and placement replicate the existing horizontal and vertical proportions (using simulated divided-light construction with spacer bars as needed), and that the exterior f-trim or l-trim details be used so the replacement ties into the wall finishes without disturbing historic fabric. Commissioners noted the applicant should provide final measured shop drawings and an installation detail showing the f- or l-trim and how the new unit will meet the stucco return.
Commissioners and the vendor discussed operability options (which sash would operate on multi-panel gliding units) and agreed the vendor should confirm the final sash configuration with the property owner; that is a property-owner preference rather than a required commission condition. The ILPC approved the certificate of appropriateness for the windows with the conditions above.
