Board approves out-of-state travel for West Oso JROTC cadet to national marksmanship competition

The West Oso ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve out-of-state travel for Cadet Samuel Alvarez and Army instructor First Sergeant Reynaldo Maldonado to compete in the Civilian Marksmanship Program national match in Anniston, Alabama, Feb. 5–8. The motion passed 7–0.
Lieutenant Colonel Oscar Vela and First Sergeant Reynaldo Maldonado presented the request, saying Alvarez qualified after finishing second in a postal JROTC shooting competition and ranking among the top shooters in a regional field of nearly 400. "On November 25, he competed in a postal JROTC comp shooting competition where he came in second out of 391 shooters," Maldonado said. The presenters told trustees the U.S. Army is covering flight and lodging; the district would pay meals for the cadet.
Board action: Trustee Liz Gutierrez made the motion to approve the travel and was seconded by Belinda Gonzales. The board recorded an aye vote from all seven trustees and the motion passed 7–0.
Why it matters: The travel will let Alvarez advance in national JROTC marksmanship competition; presenters said if Alvarez finishes among the top nine in the Army match he could advance to an all-services competition. Military instructors said the Army covers travel and lodging and will provide a rental car; the district agreed to cover the cadet's meals.
Trustees praised Alvarez and the JROTC instructors during the presentation. The board also discussed prior program history; presenters said West Oso last sent competitors to that match in 2019 and trustees discussed fundraising plans to support travel and exposure for additional cadets in the future.
