"House bill 14 oh 8 is a school superintendent request in my district," Grego said. "This will simply allow that administrator to go into their portal, punch in this kid is gone, get him off my rules." The sponsor said some small schools can see large percentage swings in graduation rates when withdrawn students remain on the books because the withdrawals were not recorded.
Members asked whether withdrawals recorded in the portal would change state aid calculations or dropout counts. Grego said he did not have an answer immediately and would follow up with the superintendent for clarity: "That's something else I'd have to get. Thanks for that question." He told the committee he and other members removed an initial proposed penalty and limited the bill to creating the reporting avenue.
The committee voted to give the bill a favorable recommendation and indicated it will send the bill forward as a do‑pass.
