City Manager Dan Moly told the Moorhead City Council that a conditional offer had been extended to Captain Chris Helmick of the Fargo Police Department for the city—s police chief position, subject to reference checks, criminal/motor background checks, education and experience verification and other standard pre-employment steps.
"A conditional offer has been extended to Chris, Helmick. Chris currently holds the rank of captain with the Fargo Police Department and has served in law enforcement since 02/2001," Moly said. He noted Helmick holds a bachelor—s degree in criminal justice from Minnesota State University Moorhead and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. Final approval was expected to come to the council on March 10 after the pre‑employment steps are completed.
Moly also announced that Deputy Police Chief Torrey Jacobson will retire on Friday after 34 years of service to the city and region. He said a public retirement celebration would be held and noted the community and staff were grateful for Jacobson—s service.
Why it matters: replacing a police chief is a significant personnel change for public safety leadership and the council will consider final approval after standard checks; the retirement of an internal senior manager affects transition planning for the department.
