Commissioner Mary moved to extend the interim appointment for 18 months; Commissioner Kathy seconded the motion. Members voted “aye” with no recorded opposition and the motion carried.
During discussion, Mark Efraim (the nominee) reported on office staffing. He said he and staff member Maddie were currently working in the office and that he had been conducting interviews for open positions. “I’m going to hire. I’ve been doing interviews for over a week and a half. We have lots of qualified candidates,” Efraim said, adding that some departures were the result of employees being recruited for other opportunities.
Several commissioners raised procedural questions about what topics may be discussed at special-called meetings. The presiding officer reminded attendees that “for special called meetings, only what’s on the agenda is the only thing that we’re supposed to be discussing.” Commissioners agreed to place broader staffing and job-description items on a future regular meeting agenda rather than address them at the special-called session.
The group also touched on scheduling for the next regular meeting; no additional special-called meetings were anticipated. The extension approved at the special-called meeting will remain in effect until the commission votes to confirm Efraim as executive director or until the 18-month period ends, whichever occurs first.
