Town Manager Grant Kleinhans told the Speedway Town Council on Feb. 24 that the town is pursuing a multi-pronged approach to address recurring traffic problems at the Crew Car Wash site and that a Crawfordsville Road pedestrian project will go to bid with significant outside funding.
"This has been an issue that we've had for the past 3 and a half years since the project was built," Kleinhans said of the Crew Car Wash location, and he told the council the town has required a nearby school to open an additional driveway and is seeking a meeting with Crew to discuss physical improvements. He said the town has asked the Speedway Redevelopment Commission to pay for a consultant to develop options, and that the police department reviewed the noise-extension request for a separate agenda item. Kleinhans noted that other Crew Car Wash locations around Indianapolis face similar issues and that stacking capacity at the site is limited.
Kleinhans also reported that the Crawfordsville Road pedestrian project is set to be bid on Wednesday and that the town has a $2,300,000 grant from the Metropolitan Planning Organization to assist with the project. He said bids will be reviewed and the project will appear on the March 10 agenda for council consideration; the town will also issue an RFP for construction inspection services that may cover both the Crawfordsville Road work and a 20th Street project depending on responses.
Kleinhans announced a calendar change: the council will cancel its March 24 meeting because of school spring break and will hold a single March meeting with a larger agenda. He invited residents to an upcoming first-quarter “casual conversation” event scheduled for the morning of Feb. 28 and noted several community events, including the State of the Town address and the Lions Club pancake breakfast.
Council members thanked Kleinhans for addressing constituent concerns and for pursuing options with the developer. No formal council actions were taken on the Crew Car Wash items at the Feb. 24 meeting; Kleinhans said staff will continue to seek meetings and options.
