Committee advances bill to clarify firefighter registration and driver's license requirement

The Senate Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee advanced S.101 on Tuesday, a bill that clarifies documentation required for firefighters registering in South Carolina.
The bill removes an earlier draft provision that would have asked for a "driver's license number and employer name" and instead requires a valid driver’s license and the employer to be listed on the application. Staff told the committee the change was requested to accommodate firefighters who live in border states but work in South Carolina.
A subcommittee amendment adopted by the committee restored the existing statutory requirement that the employer be listed in the registration application and explicitly preserved the requirement that a valid driver’s license be provided. Committee members discussed whether a license issued in another country or in a neighboring U.S. state would meet the bill’s requirement; staff and other senators noted the committee did not examine immigration or DMV reciprocity issues and that hiring agencies remain subject to South Carolina laws such as E-Verify.
The committee recorded no opposition during the subcommittee’s review and reported the bill out favorably following voice votes on the amendment and on the bill as amended.
