Committee reports three nominations to state real estate and economic boards

The Senate Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee on Tuesday reported favorably on three gubernatorial nominations to state boards and authorities, advancing nominees to the South Carolina Real Estate Appraisers Board, the Jobs and Economic Development Authority and the South Carolina Real Estate Commission.
Melinda Griffin, nominated to the South Carolina Real Estate Appraisers Board, has worked as a real estate appraiser in South Carolina for 33 years and told the committee she has experience on state and national boards. Griffin said she would be the first female appraiser representative on the board. Staff reported Griffin’s personal data questionnaire, statement of economic interest, background check, credit report and driving record were complete. Griffin disclosed a 2011 consent order related to a 2007 appraisal report-writing issue, which she described to the committee as a report-writing matter that resulted in a fine; she said the disciplinary process and recordkeeping for such matters changed in 2015.
James Augustus “Gus” Hurlong Jr., nominated to the South Carolina Jobs and Economic Development Authority, described his family business, which he said had grown from five locations to 33 and emphasized the company’s focus on job creation and community investment. Staff told the committee Hurlong’s forms and background checks were complete; Hurlong answered screening questions and said he had no arrests, bankruptcies or ethics findings to report.
Jonathan T. Stackhouse, nominated for reappointment to the South Carolina Real Estate Commission, said he was first appointed in 2012 and serves as vice president of wealth management at Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union. Stackhouse said the commission meets monthly and holds disciplinary hearings about every other month; he told senators the commission handles a range of disciplinary outcomes from caution letters to license revocations.
Each nomination was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote and will be reported out favorably from committee. The committee did not record individual roll-call tallies in the transcript; votes were taken by voice."
