SCORE to begin ARPA-funded cleanup of hazardous materials aboard USS Yorktown

Rand Reinhardt told the committee that Governor McMaster tasked SCORE with studying hazardous materials aboard the USS Yorktown and that the agency plans a two‑phase cleanup funded by a $30 million ARPA allocation.
Reinhardt said Phase 1 involved an assessment and inventory of environmental hazards aboard the ship and some minor emergency repairs. Phase 2, which the agency said will begin this month, is a cleanup of hazardous materials and remediation of items that cannot be removed. He said the work is intended to reduce risks to tourism, the economy and downstream waterways because leaked oil and other contaminants can move with tides and travel upstream into rivers.
Committee members asked whether federal partners would be involved; Reinhardt said the federal government had previously declined cleanup responsibility and that the state is proceeding with remediation using the ARPA funding. SCORE said the approach is to first address immediate hazards and then proceed to broader remediation work.
