District advances 10‑year facilities planning, completes three‑lot purchase north of Red Star for parking

District leaders reported progress on the Cape Girardeau School District No. 63 10‑year facility plan at the Feb. 24 board meeting and said the district completed a recent land purchase to address parking near Red Star.

A district representative said internal and external meetings have been underway to evaluate each district building's needs as part of the long‑range plan. Staff asked board members and the public to review an online project list of items already identified by the district's internal committee and to prioritize and add items they believe need attention. The district said dates for broader community input meetings will be scheduled starting in late March and April; times and locations will be announced once formalized with IDS, the outside planning consultant the district is using.

The representative also reported completing a land transaction for three lots north of Red Star to create parking and reduce on‑street congestion in the adjacent neighborhood. The board speaker said the purchase was intended to be a good‑neighbor action to reduce clustering on nearby streets.

Other operational notes The same report noted recent work at the Red Star site (replacement work on the old sanctuary roof), an uptick in bus counts (the district conducts bus counts twice a year for routing and state funding purposes) and a large delivery of produce to food service following a recent menu change.

Next steps District staff said they will post the project list and publicize community meetings once scheduling with IDS is complete. No board action was required at the Feb. 24 meeting on the facility plan beyond these informational updates and the completed land purchase was reported as already executed.
