Radcliff elected officials spent substantial time in the Jan. 13 work session addressing missed garbage pickups and public complaints after a heavy snow event and the change to a new contractor.
Mayor Pike and several council members said weather-related road conditions, a recent route change and temporary landfill closures contributed to missed pickups. Staff and council members said the city's new contractor had a high volume of calls and voice mails from residents (staff quoted an example of roughly 800 voice mails in a day) and that trucks were filling and making multiple trips, which delayed routes.
Council members emphasized communication challenges and asked residents to be patient while the new contractor and city staff resolve operational kinks. The mayor said the council selected the contractor at a rate of $3.50 and asked the public to give the company more time; he added the council will revisit the contract in a few months if the company does not meet performance expectations.
Council and staff acknowledged that the service disruptions were not unique to Radcliff; neighboring jurisdictions reported similar problems and the landfill had been closed for some days. Staff (Ashley) was identified as the primary contact fielding resident calls; council members thanked first responders and public works crews for storm response.
No formal action to alter the refuse contract was taken at the Jan. 13 work session; council members said staff will continue to monitor service and report back if performance does not improve.
