Valley View honors AP scholars, state principal and STEM champions at monthly board meeting

The Valley View CUSD 365U Board of Education on Feb. 24 recognized students and staff across the district, spotlighting AP Scholars, Illinois State Scholars, STEM competition winners and a statewide principal award.
Board members and district leaders introduced dozens of students from Bolingbrook and Romeoville high schools who earned AP Scholar, AP Scholar with Honor and AP Scholar with Distinction honors, and multiple Illinois State Scholars. The board also recognized Martinez Middle School’s STEM champions and the Romeoville High School chess team’s season and state-qualifying performances.
Board President Quigley led the meeting’s recognitions. Chuck Merrick, assistant principal for activities and AP testing at Bolingbrook High School, explained AP award criteria to the board and introduced the students. The board highlighted that AP credits can reduce college costs and open early-access class opportunities for students.
The board also presented the Illinois Middle School Principal of the Year award to Sonia Stella Ruiz, principal of Jane Addams Middle School. Karen Triesenberg of the Illinois Principals Association called Ruiz the middle school principal of the year and said she will be recognized at the state conference in October. In her remarks, Ruiz reflected on her background and said the recognition reflects “the hard work and dedication of our entire team.”
Other recognitions included tribute remarks for retiring Wilco career-center criminal justice instructor Michelle Gunther and applause for district staff members selected for the Illinois State Board of Education Those Who Excel awards. The superintendent noted 19 district staff members were selected for Those Who Excel nominations and awards.
The board’s remarks stressed the district’s diversity and the value of AP and other academic programs in creating college and career pathways. No board action was required for the recognitions; items were presented as part of the meeting’s consent and informational agenda.
