Kelly Walsh students highlight JROTC championships, app winners; community volunteers praised

Students from Kelly Walsh High School were featured in presentations to the Natrona County School District #1 Board of Trustees, highlighting extracurricular achievement and community service.
Master Gunnery Sergeant Fred Pickering introduced the Kelly Walsh Marine Corps Junior ROTC program and said the program’s goals include leadership, citizenship and discipline. Cadet Captain Treston Jimenez told trustees the company has 36 cadets and described the program’s schedule, practice regimen and 450 hours of community service this year. Cadet Captain Emma Jones outlined success across three competitive teams — marksmanship, drill and color guard, and CyberPatriot — noting the marksmanship team has held the state title five of six years and the cyber team has consecutive state titles. The cadets described recent national placements and upcoming state competitions (marksmanship March 8 at Kelly Walsh and drill championships in Cheyenne in April).
Becky Beyer, a Kelly Walsh computer programming teacher, introduced seniors Emerson and Haley, who won Wyoming’s Congressional App Challenge. The students described an app they built to match high school students to scholarship opportunities based on a personality-driven survey; they said the app lists scholarship costs and due dates and was developed independently.
Public commenter Corey Weibel, representing the Casper Middle School Nordic ski program, thanked the district and volunteers for providing transportation to on-mountain practices and races; he said Casper schools fielded about 125 skiers this season and hosted events with roughly 250 competitors.
Superintendent Hensley announced a Kiwanis Club donation of roughly $3,180 in kindergarten books titled The Couch Potato. Trustees praised the student presenters and volunteer support.
Several trustees encouraged the public to attend upcoming events: the Kelly Walsh production of The Music Man, peach-basket basketball and state tournaments for wrestling and Nordic skiing.
