East Bethel's fire chief told the council that the department responded to 85 calls for service in January, including 64 medical calls, three fires (a chicken coop blaze and two grass fires), three mutual-aid calls and three accident responses.
The chief reminded residents that with melting snowpack they must obtain burning permits for fires larger than 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet; burning hours were stated as 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. He also urged residents to check smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors when daylight-saving time begins March 9 and to create home fire-exit plans.
The chief warned about the fire risk posed by heat lamps used for chicks after the department responded to a chicken-coop fire; he advised securing lamps to avoid tipping onto bedding. He also said the department expects to participate in ice-rescue training in late March (March 24 was offered as a likely date, with daytime and evening exercises) to bolster interagency cooperation with county marine units and the sheriff's office.
The department will post training dates on the city's official social media pages and provide reminders to council staff prior to exercises.
