Board approves second garage at 1090 West Second

The Madison Historic District Board of Review on Feb. 24 granted a certificate of appropriateness to property owner JD Webster to construct a second storage garage at 1090 West Second Street.
Webster said his proposed building would be identical to the existing structure and measure about 36 by 60 feet for personal storage; the site is in the Heavy Manufacturing District and the current building dates from the 1990s.
Historic District staff and board members reviewed the site, plans and materials and found the new outbuilding would retain proportional mass and materials consistent with the existing garage. “The material looks like it’s fine…you’re duplicating it,” a board member said while presenting findings of fact.
After findings, the board voted on a motion to grant the certificate; the roll-call vote was unanimous among members present. Staff told the applicant he would receive the certificate in the mail and was reminded to obtain the city building permit before beginning construction.
The board’s approval noted the new garage would not create new eave or roof-ridge conflicts and would be sited at the right side of the lot to avoid blocking views or access for neighbors.
Webster was advised to coordinate with staff and the building department to confirm setbacks and permitting requirements before starting work.
