Vigo County Veterans Affairs reports millions in benefit dollars delivered; office logs thousands of contacts

Vigo County Veterans Affairs staff presented an update to the commissioners on services and benefits they helped secure for veterans and families.
"The Vigo County Veterans Assistance Office advocates for veterans and families from all conflict from World War 2 to modern day," said Tim Cunningham, veteran service officer, with Vicki Albright also presenting. They outlined benefits the office assists with, including disability compensation, health care enrollment, higher education benefits, burial benefits and homeowner accessibility grants.
Albright and Cunningham told commissioners the office brought in more than $1,000,000 for veterans in 2024 and over $4,000,000 since 2020; they described the funds as compensation paid directly to veterans and cited broader county-level economic effects such as purchases of homes, cars and other necessities.
At the Vigo County annex, staff recorded 2,233 phone calls and 1,610 appointments in 2024, Albright said. The clinic office also handles daily walk-ins and appointments; Albright said she averages eight to 12 veterans a day at the clinic.
The officers said they serve veterans from beyond Vigo County in some cases (roughly 1%–3% of visits), and they described coordination with the VA clinic on scheduling and check-in procedures. Both Albright and Cunningham emphasized continuity of service and the office's role helping veterans navigate benefits.
