Cedar Springs board hears budget outlook amid steep enrollment decline; bond projects proceed

Cedar Springs Public Schools officials reported on the district’s budget outlook and bond-construction progress at the Feb. 10 board meeting, saying state one-time payments and higher interest income temporarily improve the district’s position even as enrollment declines continue.

The discussion focused on state budget proposals and how categorical changes could affect the district’s bottom line. District staff reported the governor’s proposed 4.1% increase to the foundation allowance, continued Section 31a mental-health funding at current levels and new categorical allocations (referred to in the meeting as Section 147c4 and Section 147c2). Board members were also shown updated projections that rely on a mix of recurring and one-time state dollars and noted increased costs from retirement systems that reduce the net gain from the state proposals.
