At a meeting of the Montgomery City Historic Preservation Review Board, members voted to approve a roof replacement at 1850 Lockerbie Street in Old Cloverdale, allowing the homeowner to remove existing asbestos shingles and install manufactured wood shingles meant to resemble the house’s original slate roof.
The decision matters because the property sits in a historic district where exterior materials and visual character are reviewed; the board said the proposed shingles and submitted samples were sufficient to preserve the house’s appearance while addressing an asbestos hazard.
Applicant Jane Smith described the project and brought photographs and samples to the meeting. Smith told the board she and her husband, Jay, are replacing an asbestos shingle roof with a wood-shingle product and left a sample with staff for review. City staff and board members questioned the contractor briefly about shingle sizing and visual match with the original roof. Staff member Sean Rose confirmed a sample had been left with him for inspection.
After discussion, a board member moved to approve the application “as submitted,” the motion was seconded and members voted in favor. The board did not record a roll-call tally in the public remarks; the chair instructed the applicant to proceed and added a practical reminder about weather.
“Go. Fix your roof before it rains again,” Chair Elizabeth Brown said after the vote.
The board’s approval allows the homeowner to proceed with the work as presented; applicants typically must follow any staff conditions listed on the permit and coordinate final inspection with city staff.
