Local foundation awards classroom seed grants; board hears educator project showing cultural literacy materials

Representatives of the Faculty Educational Endowment Foundation (often referred to as SEIF) described the organization’s history and grant program at the Feb. 24 meeting. Julie Maynard Johnson and April Deutsch represented the foundation and said it has awarded 603 grants totaling nearly $520,000 since 1991.
The foundation funds classroom projects across the district with donor contributions and awards grants up to $2,500 based on an application rubric. For the 2024–25 school year the foundation awarded 20 grants totaling more than $27,000, the presenters said.
Justine (teacher presenter identified as a grant recipient) described a seed grant titled “Indigenous Education for All: The Cultural Significance of Long Hair.” The grant purchased two books by Native authors and illustrators for every kindergarten classroom and for a preschool classroom; the teacher said the materials are intended to validate Native students’ identity, foster belonging and help staff include culturally relevant conversations in early grades. The presenter read an excerpt and described classroom conversations about why long hair can signify strength and identity.
The board was told donor contributions and volunteer support allow the foundation to sustain its awards; the presenters asked how community members could donate via the foundation’s website or by mail. The foundation noted that donors of $1,000 or more are recognized on a lobby plaque at the high school and online.
