Activities director highlights student successes as athletics, arts and academic teams enter busy spring

Andy Brown, Shakopee activities director, summarized a surge of student activity and competitive successes at the Feb. 24 school board meeting, noting a busy spring calendar for athletics, arts and academic teams.
Brown said the Quiz Bowl team tied for ninth at state and qualified for nationals; the knowledgeable team advanced to regionals. Debate expanded this year to include congressional debate and sectional success; student Rohan Bukati won a first-place in an in-season tournament. The culinary program won state and will participate in national competitions; the team is planning a pop-up fundraiser at Perk Up Kitchen in Bloomington.
DECA qualified 76 students for state, and several may advance to the international conference. The speech team has eight returning state entrants and the district will host a home state tournament; Brown urged the community to attend. The one-act play season concluded and the spring musical, Anastasia, and the spring play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, are scheduled with an experienced set designer engaged.
Brown also highlighted All-State music performances, honor band activities, robotics tournaments, HOSA and educator-licensure competitions, and a fledgling student music-recording group and a community storytelling project called The Unwritten Narrative. He closed by reminding the board of CultureFest on March 14 and a series of upcoming state and regional events.
Board members praised the range of student opportunities and the large volunteer support that helps run events and fundraisers.
