Parent says explicit books are available in Frederick County schools, says she was removed from school board meeting

A resident identified as Christy Scarborough of the Stonewall District used the meeting's citizen comment period to allege that sexually explicit and explicit‑language books are available in Frederick County Public Schools and said she had been removed from a recent school board meeting after reading a passage.

"Out of all of the explicit books they have listed, I have obtained 2 of them and let me tell you they are bad," Scarborough said during public comment. She named titles during her remarks and read a passage she described as explicit; the transcript records the passage that prompted her removal from a school board meeting.

Supervisor Lockridge and Chairman Ludwig responded during the board's discussion period by pointing to the school system's online resources and the existing opt‑out process parents may use. Lockridge said the district's website lists materials identified as explicit and that parents can remove their students from access; she and other supervisors said they prefer an "opt in" model but noted the current system allows parents to opt out.

Chairman Ludwig directed the public to the Frederick County Public Schools website and showed supervisors where the explicit‑materials information is posted; he said the administration will work with school staff and the public information officer to make navigation and opt‑out steps clearer for residents.

The board did not take formal action on materials or policing school library content at this meeting; the comment was recorded in the citizen comment portion of the agenda.
