County schedules strategic meeting after jail population uptick, staff say

County administration staff alerted the Spokane County Board of Commissioners to a rapid rise in the inmate population at county detention facilities and said they will schedule an extended strategic meeting to discuss municipal contracts, Geiger facility challenges and planned capital work.
Scott, a county administrator, said the county’s jail population has “rapidly grown back up” and has been “hovering around the 900 level” over the prior two weeks, a faster increase than is typically seen. He said the county also reduced its U.S. Marshals inmate population previously, which affects capacity calculations. Scott recommended a strategic meeting to consider municipal boarding contracts, notification provisions, Geiger‑related issues and capital plans for the downtown facility.
Commissioners discussed timing and agreed to move the planned strategic meeting from March 3 to March 10 so more board members can attend and to allow a longer conversation. Scott said he would work with staff to prepare briefing materials and collect data on municipal contracts, detention capacity, and capital‑work timing. No action was taken at the briefing other than scheduling the strategic planning session.
