Gordon County commissioners approve rezoning, equipment purchases, cleaning contracts and internship grant

At its regular meeting, the Gordon County Board of Commissioners approved a zoning change, several procurement and contract items, a surplus declaration and a small internship grant.
Rezoning: The commission approved application Z2024-033 to rezone a 2.11-acre parcel at 120 Quail Hollow Drive NW in Sugar Valley from agricultural to low-density residential (R-1). Planning staff recommended approval and the planning commission had voted 5-0 to support the rezoning. Commissioner Sutherland moved to approve the application; Commissioner Abernathy seconded. The roll call recorded votes in favor from Mister Stewart, Mister Abernathy, Mister Sutherland, Mister Cunningham, Chair Owens and Mister Kearns; the motion carried.
Procurement and contracts: Commissioners approved the following items (motion and second recorded for each item; all motions carried):
- Public Works purchase of a flex-wing offset rotary mower from Smith's Equipment Company for $21,740, charged to GL account 329542200341; the item was budgeted in 2024.
- Acceptance of an estimate for $20,021.02 to be reimbursed from the City of Plainville for paving materials to be allocated to Park Street as part of LMEC; Plainville city council approved the reimbursement.
- Annual cleaning contract at the AG Center with Gordon Cleaning Services for $15,600 (GL account 419522133). County staff said the cost is partially offset because a building-and-grounds position was not filled, freeing about $79,000 in salary savings; the net difference between contracts and vacancies was stated as about $8,000.
- Annual cleaning contract for the Administration Building, Government Plaza and juvenile court with Gordon Cleaning Services for $40,040 (GL account 419522133).
- Declaration of certain items as surplus to be sold at the county auction scheduled for Feb. 28–March 1.
Grant acceptance: The commission accepted a Georgia County Internship Program (GCIP) grant in the amount of $3,260 from the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia to reimburse summer administration intern wages for a special project in 2025.
