Solon schools announce state diving champion, show-choir invitational, Ethnic Expo, bus recruitment and kindergarten registration

Athletics: the board recognized Mitch Caldwell as the district’s state diving champion, continuing a multi-year run of success in diving for Solon. Board members praised the diving program and its coach for sustaining competitive results.
Music and arts: Solon High School will host the Music in Motion Show Choir Invitational on March 1. The board said the event runs all day with preliminaries and evening finals; hosts expect a large field of competitors, with final awards in the evening. Tickets were announced at $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students. The board said the district hosts many visiting choirs and uses the whole building for the event.
Community events: The Solon High School BRIDAL UN Club (recorded as "Solon Bridal UN Club" in the agenda materials) will host its annual Ethnic Expo on March 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the high school. The board described the event as family friendly with cultural entertainment and food.
Transportation recruitment: To address ongoing bus-driver staffing challenges, the district will hold a "Drive the Bus" recruitment event on March 15 from 9 to 11 a.m. The board said licensed drivers will be on hand to accompany attendees around a lot and that on-the-spot interviews will be available; the district said training pay and competitive local wages are offered and that the event aims to attract more drivers to reduce combined routes.
Kindergarten registration: The board reminded families that kindergarten information night is scheduled for Feb. 26 at 6:15 p.m. (virtual via Zoom) and that kindergarten registration opens March 3 and runs through March 14. The board said children must be 5 years old by Aug. 1 to enroll and that registering during March 3–14 is necessary to guarantee a slot in a child’s home school; failure to register in that window may require placement at another school for the year for staffing reasons.
Logistics: The board noted parking and volunteer support for large events and encouraged community participation. No public comments were offered at either public-comment period during the meeting.
