Board members debated proposed changes to the county's holiday and pay calendar during the Jan. 13 meeting before adopting the 2025 calendar as presented.
Supervisor Mr. Hodges argued to reduce the number of paid holidays, saying the current policy provides employees paid time for 40 hours while requiring only 35 work hours (an argument he characterized as "free money"). He provided a back-of-envelope example that, assuming $20 an hour and 25 administrative staff, the combination of additional holiday hours could cost roughly $130,000 annually. Hodges asked staff to provide more precise numbers before the board's next meeting. Several other supervisors pushed back, saying the extra days off had raised staff morale and that the county's calendar typically follows the state schedule.
After discussion and an earlier motion to remove specific days from the calendar, the board voted to adopt the county's 2025 holiday and pay calendar as presented. Staff noted they would bring back clarifying edits to the bylaws and the calendar wording for ministerial corrections and that the county would prepare more detailed cost estimates on the holiday pay implications.
Board members also briefly discussed moving and canceling several meeting dates earlier on the agenda; staff said the updated schedule would be posted on the county web site.
