The George Washington Regional Commission presented a Dahlgren bicycle and pedestrian safety plan prepared under the county’s rural transportation work program.
GWRC staff said the 52‑page plan updates the 2018 Trails Master Plan to reflect current VDOT safety and design guidelines and traffic forecasts, including higher projected vehicle volumes on Route 301. The study area covers Owens Drive, Dahlgren Road, Potomac Drive and adjacent commercial and residential areas within the Dahlgren village district the county identified in its comprehensive plan.
Plan recommendations include short‑ and long‑term safety improvements: crosswalk and signal upgrades at busy intersections, shared‑use paths connecting commercial nodes to residential cores, and focused crash‑reduction measures at identified high‑crash locations. The plan includes crash data, vDOT potential improvement sites, and traffic projections to 2050; GWRC staff recommended using the plan to support future funding applications such as TAP or Smart Scale.
GWRC asked the board to open a public comment period and scheduled the plan to be posted on its website. Board members agreed to a 30‑day public comment period and to coordinate with county staff on any revisions. No final board action was taken that night; staff said the plan will be brought back for formal adoption after public comment and any edits.
GWRC noted the plan is intended to support walkable, village‑scale growth in Dahlgren and recommended projects be prioritized according to funding availability and safety benefit.
