Supervisors ask VDOT for speed and truck‑route studies after fatal crash and local development

County officials on Jan. 21 heard a Virginia Department of Transportation representative outline planned rural maintenance work and traffic reviews and were urged by supervisors and residents to speed up reviews of hazardous road sections.
The VDOT representative told the board that two rural rustic maintenance projects — Cherry Hill and Tranquility Lane — are planned to begin when weather permits, and that proposed truck restrictions on Halifax Road and Sterling Road remain in the approval pipeline. The representative said the Halifax Road restriction has a “small technicality” on an alternate route that staff expect to resolve, and the Sterling Road request has been submitted for approval.
The board initiated a speed study on Route 40 at the western limits of McKinney after members and residents raised concerns about a 35‑mph zone within new development. The VDOT representative said the Transportation Safety Committee recommended the study and that staff will initiate it; if no recent study exists, VDOT will conduct one.
Supervisors and members of the public called for a review of a stretch of Route 460 near Raven Road after a recent fatal collision. Commenters noted local development, a new daycare at Oakland Church, and nearby businesses that have increased pedestrian and vehicular activity. The VDOT representative explained that fatal crash reviews require a state police reconstruction and final DMV report before district traffic engineers can complete an analysis; “It’s typically a couple months at least,” the representative said of the timeline.
Board members requested VDOT evaluate the posted 55‑mph speed limit where neighbors say traffic routinely exceeds the limit and where sight‑line issues (including sun glare) may contribute to crashes. The board discussed possibly convening a community meeting after the study results are available.
The VDOT representative invited questions and said staff will check when the last speed study was completed and begin a new study if warranted.
