Codington County commissioners approved a funding agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for flood-monitoring services for calendar year 2025.
County staff said the agreement covers river gauges along the Big Sioux River and related monitoring services that provide publicly accessible data. The county recorded two line items of $11,064.45 and $7,004.95 for a combined total of $19,140 for the January 1–December 31, 2025 service period.
Commissioner Johnson moved to approve the agreement; Commissioner Schwere seconded the motion. Commissioners discussed which party is listed as the first and second part in the agreement; staff clarified USGS is the first party and Codington County is the second party. The motion passed on a voice vote.
Staff said river-gauge data are a vital resource for county operations in flood-prone areas; the measure was described as budgeted and routine annual expense.
