Codington County temporarily shortens treasurer office public hours during March for DMV system transition

Codington County commissioners voted March 3 to temporarily close the treasurer's office to the public at 4 p.m. through March 31 to allow staff to complete end-of-day balancing during a transition to a new DMV software system.
Treasurer Carol asked the board for the change, saying the office had been staying as late as 6 p.m. to balance accounts while staff learn the new software. Carol told commissioners the vendor has programmers working on the system and that the county previously encountered lengthy balancing work during an earlier system conversion.
Commissioners discussed the proposed end date; Carol originally requested an April 15 return to normal hours but agreed to the board’s compromise to restore regular hours on April 1 if the transition is complete. The board directed the change to begin Monday, March 3; the new temporary public hours will be 8 a.m.–4 p.m.; normal hours (8 a.m.–5 p.m.) are to resume April 1 unless staff request and the board approves an extension.
The motion to adopt the temporary hours was moved by Commissioner Gable and seconded by Commissioner Johnson; it passed on a voice vote. Commissioners asked staff to publicize the change to prevent confusion for residents who might arrive after 4 p.m.
Treasurer staff said they will issue public notices and work with local media to inform residents of the temporary hours.
