Bassett Unified board approves three closed‑session actions, scholarship fund and two resolutions

The Bassett Unified School District Board of Education on Feb. 25 voted in closed session to direct the superintendent to issue a notice of non‑reelection under Education Code section 449.21 and approved two employee‑related settlement actions, the board reported after the closed session.

According to the clerk’s closed‑session report, the board on a motion by Board member Dina Flores with a second by Vice President Patrice Stanzione voted 5–0 to direct the superintendent to non‑reelect the employee identified in the record by an internal employee number and to give notice pursuant to Education Code section 449.21.

The board also approved, by a 5–0 vote reported in closed session, a compromise and release agreement to resolve claim 4a2302m7k5w‑0001 for $1,010,000. The clerk’s report attributed that motion to Board member Aaron Simmental with a second by Vice President Stanzione. The report further records approval of a workers’ compensation stipulated award (CIP claim ASCY‑01‑2547) for 8% permanent disability in the amount required ($6,960) with future medical care left open; that motion was reported as made and seconded and approved 5–0.

The board also approved two open‑session resolutions during the Feb. 25 meeting: Resolution 032‑25 to authorize participation in a zero‑emissions school‑bus infrastructure initiative and Resolution 031‑25 proclaiming National Women’s History Month. Superintendent Alejandro Alvarez summarized the bus initiative to the board, saying it would allow the district to pursue zero‑emission buses at no upfront purchase cost as part of infrastructure funding.

“Look. This would be actually where we would get the, the buses for free,” Superintendent Alvarez told the board during discussion of the resolutions.

Separately, board members approved creating a Bassett Unified Board of Education Scholarship Fund. The board’s motion authorizes establishment of a fund that district payroll can draw from if individual board members voluntarily elect a $25 monthly payroll deduction; funds collected will be distributed in May and divided into three awards for Bassett High School and Nueva Vista students. The board voted to create the scholarship infrastructure and directed staff to implement payroll procedures and return with details.

The clerk recorded all votes in open session after the board returned from closed session. There was no additional public discussion recorded about the closed‑session personnel action beyond the clerk’s announcement. The board set a follow‑up to bring proposed governance‑norm changes to a workshop or study session in March or April.
