Walsburg staff reported Nov. 7 that the town’s new water tank finally reached full capacity after more than a month of filling and that a leak test started and was scheduled to finish on the following Monday. Contractors began chlorination and flushing, and town staff said they are waiting for the bacteria (coliform) test result before finalizing system operations.
Officials said the flow meter on the system was not working and had been ordered repaired so accurate measurements could be recorded. The town also is coordinating with Rocky Mountain Power to enable a pressure-reducing valve (PRV) hookup. Staff discussed the old tank’s future and said some community members and ditch companies have expressed interest in using overflow for irrigation; the council did not reach a decision and noted additional regulatory and management questions would have to be addressed.
Water staff acknowledged temporary chlorine odors reported by some residents after recent flushing; staff said the smell typically indicates chlorine levels have dropped and that chlorination steps were taken only to clear the system and pass required tests.
