Board adopts VDOT secondary six-year plan; county’s $20,000-a-year allocation banked for future projects

The Charles City County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to adopt the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) update to the secondary six-year plan, which leaves currently unallocated construction funds in a county holding account for future secondary road projects.
Philip Frasier of VDOT told the board that Charles City receives “about $20,000 a year” in secondary construction funds. He said there are currently no identified projects in the plan and that the funds will be placed into a balance entry account until the county and staff identify specific projects.
Marshall Wynne, also with VDOT, told supervisors the local office completed 62 work orders in the past month and has been responding to snow operations since Jan. 6. Wynne listed routine maintenance tasks including pothole patching, ditching, pipe replacement and tree and brush removal.
Frasier described the annual process: VDOT and county staff will meet to review potential projects and, when a specific need is identified, assign funds from the accumulated balance. He said the plan adoption at Tuesday’s meeting is procedural and that the county will revisit project selection in the months ahead.
The board made a motion to adopt the secondary six-year plan as presented and the motion passed with the recorded vote of the supervisors present at the meeting.
