Wallsburg approves weed spraying at cemetery after donated sod fails to take

Wallsburg officials told the council on Sept. 5 that donated sod at the town cemetery did not take as expected and that staff have arranged for herbicide spraying to address thistles and weeds.
Staff said donated sod had not been watered as required and that recent rains offered only partial relief. The town contracted a vendor (Buffalos) to spray the cemetery on Tuesday, Sept. 10, for broad thistle and weed control. Staff and council members said the recommended precautions after spraying include no watering for 24 hours and no mowing for 48 hours; they also advised residents that fresh flowers left on graves could be affected by the herbicide.
Staff reported the selected bid for spraying was about $500 less than an alternative vendor (Grid Iron). Council members said they had heard resident concerns about the cemetery appearance and that staff would follow up on watering schedules and maintenance.
