Council hears update on broadband grant timelines and potential providers

At the Sept. 5 meeting council members received an update on broadband efforts and state grant timelines. Scott Larson said the statewide broadband program has a December application deadline and that at least one party — not Utah Broadband — has reportedly applied to bring fiber to Wallsburg.
Larson said permitting and right-of-way coordination will be a major issue for any broadband project. He described a discussion about whether the town should own the fiber infrastructure and lease access to internet service providers to encourage competition, but cautioned the town may lack resources to operate such an arrangement.
Councilors said they will continue to pursue state grant opportunities and to coordinate with retired local contacts and others who previously helped arrange fiber to other town facilities. No formal action was taken; the council will monitor application and funding schedules and report back when more information is available.
