Main Canyon Road design continues; City Park Trail comes in under estimate and set for quick construction

The Wallsburg Town Council received two infrastructure updates Sept. 5: the Main Canyon Road project is progressing through design and environmental review, and the City Park Trail bid came in well under the engineer’s estimate.
Troy Thompson reported the Main Canyon Road project is in the design stage and that an archaeologist is scheduled to inspect a historic irrigation ditch the following week as part of environmental review. Thompson said the plan is to advertise and bid the Canyon Road project this year so the town can apply for additional projects that require having active work off the town’s project list.
On the City Park Trail, council staff said seven contractors submitted bids and six were within 10 percent of the estimate. The low bidder was described as coming in at roughly 58 percent of the estimate, with the three lowest bids within about $7,000 of each other. The project was awarded to Geneva (the contractor named at the meeting); staff expected a notice to proceed in roughly 10 days and projected a 25 working‑day construction schedule once the contractor begins, or about three weeks.
Council members said UDOT provided additional funds during the bidding process that the town may no longer need; that money will be returned to UDOT and the town will retain some contingency funds. Staff estimated roughly $50,000 (round numbers used at the meeting) would be available to restore design elements that had been removed for budget reasons, such as benches and trees, and recommended the town consider adding those during a preconstruction meeting.
No formal action was required for either update; Main Canyon Road remains in design and environmental review and the City Park Trail construction contract move forward under the town’s contract award procedures. Council members said they will discuss specific landscape additions and timing at the preconstruction meeting and report back when a notice to proceed is issued.
