Residents press council on cemetery upkeep; town schedules weed control and follow-up

Wallsburg, Utah — Cemetery maintenance drew both public comment and staff attention at the Wallsburg Town Council meeting on Sept. 5.
During public comment, residents urged the council to return cemetery maintenance to the agenda for discussion. Later in the meeting staff reported that solicited donated sod had not been watered properly and that some areas showed significant dieback. Town staff said recent rain helped, but there have been complaints.
Town staff told the council they contracted Buffalos to spray weeds at the cemetery and scheduled the work for Sept. 10. Staff warned that herbicide application may affect fresh flowers and that no watering should occur for 24 hours following spraying and no mowing for 48 hours. The cemetery spraying contract returned a bid about $500 cheaper than an alternative contractor, staff said.
Town volunteers and residents were also reported to be offering headstone cleaning help; staff asked residents to follow guidelines so ornaments and headstones are not affected by chemical treatment.
What happens next: contractor Buffalos will spray the cemetery on Sept. 10; staff will monitor the area and coordinate communication with families about the timing and short-term effects of the treatment.
