Council hears broadband grant update; statewide application deadline set for December

A council member reported attending a statewide broadband meeting and said there is a funding application deadline in early December. The council noted that a separate entity (not the regional Utah Broadband consortium) has applied or is preparing to apply for a fiber build that would bring fiber into Wallsburg via a single route; council members said they do not yet know the applicant’s identity for certain but mentioned local individuals who attended the meeting.
Council members and others offered two high‑level options for long‑term structure of service: (1) town-owned infrastructure that the municipality controls and leases to multiple ISPs to preserve competition, or (2) infrastructure owned and operated by a private provider. Council members acknowledged both options have tradeoffs and said the town may lack resources to operate and maintain a network itself.
Council members cited permitting as a major barrier for fiber deployment and said they will continue to explore partnerships and possible municipal roles ahead of the December application window.
