Board hears Early College Credit/Start College Now update; applications and budget implications noted

Holmen School District administrators outlined the district—s Early College Credit and Start College Now participation and noted budget implications during the Feb. 24 meeting.
"Student applications, they have until March 1 for the fall semester..." District Administrator Dr. Mueller said, explaining application deadlines and the distinction between Start College Now (courses at Western Technical College) and the Early College Credit program (courses at UW-system, private or tribal colleges).
Nut graf: Administrators reported approximately 20 students had applied for Start College Now for the coming fall and three students had applied to attend the University of WisconsinLa Crosse for college credit. The district estimated the associated cost at about $12,000 and said the March meeting will include final counts for board consent and an overview presentation in the fall.
Dr. Mueller told the board student applications for fall are due March 1 and applications for the following spring are due Oct. 1. "March 1 will come around, we'll get the final count...and I'll get that information for you before you would consent on this at our next meeting in March," Mueller said. The administrator added that not all applicants may be able to participate depending on scheduling and capacity.
Discussion vs. decision: The item was informational; the board did not take formal action on the Early College/Start College Now enrollments or costs on Feb. 24. Administrators said a consent item with final counts and budget details will be presented at the March meeting.
Ending: District staff indicated they will return with a final participation count and a budget summary ahead of the March consent vote; Lindsay Sipe is scheduled to provide a fall overview of the program.
