Tooele Board of Education debates limits, equity after rise in fee-waiver travel costs

Tooele Board of Education members spent the work meeting focused on the district's student travel policy after staff presented detailed data showing that the district's fee-waiver costs for student travel have risen sharply.

Board discussion centered on who should pay for travel, how many trips should be allowed, and whether out-of-season national competitions for some activities should be treated differently from enrichment trips.

Staffer Keith (presenting on the travel policy) told the board the district recorded $36,717.10 in fee-waiver travel last year and, through early February this school year, had waived $259,980.99 in travel fees districtwide. He cautioned those numbers change as more spring and late-season travel occurs and said staffers extrapolated a much higher year-end total if current trends continue. Keith also told the board about a proposed state measure, House Bill 397, which would limit fee-waiver students to one waived trip and allow a second waived trip only if the student "worked it off" through an agreement with a principal.
