County to apply for state grant to stabilize Springbrook riverbank after erosion
Summary
Dunn County Emergency Management said it will apply on a property owner's behalf for a state-funded mitigation grant to address riverbank erosion near Springbrook; the county would act as applicant and, if awarded, pass through funds while the homeowner would be responsible for the local match.

Dunn County Emergency Management told the Judiciary and Law Committee it has received state approval to apply for a mitigation grant on behalf of a private property owner in the Town of Spring Brook who experienced erosion and flood damage in recent years.
Melissa (Emergency Management/911) said the county's role will be as the local government applicant because the grant program requires a government sponsor; the homeowner would receive any award but would be responsible for the local match. "This really wouldn't be anything that Dunn County would — we wouldn't be receiving any of the money. We're just applying for the grant on their behalf because it has to be a local government agency that applies for this grant," Melissa said.
Melissa said the project was reviewed by the state mitigation office and that engineers will assess eligibility and scope. She said the homeowner's match could be substantial — she estimated "dollars 60 some thousand" (approximate) — and that the county does not yet know whether the grant will be awarded.
Melissa recalled a similar county-assisted project in 2014 that was completed successfully and said the county intends to submit the application on the homeowner's behalf; she promised to update the committee if the county is awarded funding.
Ending: County staff will prepare and submit the state mitigation grant application as the local government sponsor and return to the committee with an update if the award is received.
