Board hears $300,000 request to widen shoulders on Dials Mill Road resurfacing project

Public works staff asked the board to approve a $300,000 budget amendment to add shoulder widening to the FY25 resurfacing project for Dials Mill Road and reported a recommended total project budget of $9,056,310.42.
“This item of business is a budget amendment in the amount of $300,000 for shoulder widening on Dials Mill Road as part of the FY 25 resurfacing project,” Jody said, noting the intent to widen shoulders and resurface simultaneously. Jody presented the recommended funding split: $2,000,000 from SPLOST, $6,300,000 from T-SPLOST and $756,310.42 from LMIG funds.
Public works recommended approving the $300,000 amendment, approving the FY25 resurfacing project for the stated total, authorizing the chairman to execute necessary documents, and approving future budget amendments up to the contract amount for the life of the project.
Commissioners asked whether Georgia Department of Transportation had discussed widening the road and whether traffic counts showed increased usage. Jody said he was not aware of GDOT plans for widening and that the county had not recently reviewed traffic counts that would indicate a significant increase in use. No final board vote on the amendment was recorded in the Jan. 28 transcript.
If approved in a future vote, staff said shoulder widening would be coordinated with resurfacing and follow the county’s standard procurement and construction process.
