Middletown High student’s drawing wins Ohio Art Council award, to be displayed at Ohio House

The Middletown City Board of Education recognized Middletown High School student Francisco Santana Matos on Feb. 24 after his colored‑pencil artwork "World Peace" won an Ohio Art Council Artistic Achievement award for District 46 and will be displayed at the Ohio House of Representatives from 2024 through 2026.
Board member introduced the recognition and called Francisco and his mother, Ramona Matos, to the microphone. The board described the selection as a high honor and noted the piece’s theme of unity and harmony. The board said the district is proud to have a student represented among other winners from across the state.
Francisco Santana Matos, a student in Mrs. Keane’s painting and drawing class, told the board he was "thankful for this opportunity" and credited his art teacher and his mother for encouraging him. Board members mentioned Francisco’s participation in the Middletown Youth Police Academy and noted he plans to pursue police officer training after graduation. Mrs. Keane, Francisco’s art teacher, was present at the recognition.
The board asked Francisco to remain for photographs. The board encouraged the public to celebrate district students’ achievements and noted the piece will be on public display in Columbus as part of the Ohio Art Council exhibition.
Francisco’s selection will keep his work in the Ohio House through 2026; no sale or funding details were discussed during the recognition.
