Courthouse renovation advances; commissioners approve shelving and amended furniture layout

County officials told the Daviess County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 25 that the courthouse renovation is proceeding and that crews have mitigated a floor truss issue in a new Shelby unit by adding a lower 6‑foot wall. Officials said they have coordinated with the prosecutor and probation staff about the layout for the space and expect moves in April or May.
The board approved a $31,677 contract with Tri State Systems to supply sliding storage shelving for renovated courthouse space, to be paid from the courthouse contingency fund. "That 1 is part of the renovation... we're gonna have sliding shelves like we have in the basement, so it gives us a lot more storage," said Lauren Milton, who presented the shelving bids and procurement background.
Commissioners also approved an additional shelving unit for the county records basement, a $27,800 contract that Milton said will hold confidential records and will be funded from the perpetuation fund pending council appropriation. Milton said the records team has already scanned a large volume of files and that the new shelving will secure the remaining confidential material.
The board approved an amended furniture layout for the renovated courthouse — the added units have already been deducted from project contingency — and commissioners instructed staff to continue coordination on TV mounts, move sequencing and department logistics. The votes approving the Tri State contracts and the furniture amendment passed unanimously (3–0).
Officials said storage and secure access will remain available for genealogy researchers under controlled conditions; a gated, fenced storage area will be used for confidential files once staff complete the move and security installations.
No changes to the overall contingency pool were reported beyond the items approved at the meeting; the presenters said sufficient contingency remained to cover the contracts approved that day.
