Resident urges schoolwide ban on phones and changes to dress code; asks for public budget access

At the public-comment portion of the meeting, resident Ronnie Pierotti asked the school committee to adopt a policy banning cell phones next year and to tighten the district dress code.
“I like to see all phones gone next year, and I wish you would write the policy up on cell phones. It causes too much trouble,” Pierotti said, and added that students’ reliance on phones undermines learning in class.
Pierotti also urged restricting hooded garments and caps, citing past successful changes at the high school and asking why principals cannot set policies at the school level. He requested that the committee make budget documents available for public review during budget hearings rather than require attendees to keep copies.
Committee members later discussed policy review processes and said policy changes would be routed through the policy subcommittee for review before coming back to the full committee.
